On February 3rd, 2010, Albert Andress, the last of my grandfather's siblings passed away. He was eighty-six years old. Below is his obituary from The Pocono Record, Stroudsburg, PA
----------
Albert R. Andress, 86, died peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Doylestown Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Jean (Safin) Andress, who passed away in 2001.
Born in East Stroudsburg, he was the last surviving of nine children of the late William S. and Celesta Siptroth Andress.
He was a printer at Hughes Printing Co., East Stroudsburg, for 44 years.
He was active in the TKE fraternity, where he was an honorable TKE.
He and his wife enjoyed their interactions with the fraternity while they lived in East Stroudsburg. They moved to the Central Bucks area in 1983. He then took a job delivering medicines for a pharmacy to various nursing homes from the Lehigh Valley to Philadelphia. He retired in 1994 when his wife became ill with Alzheimer's disease.
He was an active member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Bedminster, where he enjoyed going to church on Fridays to fold bulletins with other volunteers.
He was very outgoing and social with everyone. You could always hear him whistling and he would greet you with a big smile and that "Albert" grin. He also enjoyed an occasional pipe while watching the birds that would come to his many bird feeders. He was a "walker" and loved to walk every day before he became ill. He would stop and visit the police and township administration along with others in the neighborhood as he continued his journey every day. He had many coffee stops along the way.
He is survived by his three children, Alice Anne Babinetz and her husband, Joseph, and their son, Alex, William S. Andress and his wife, Marilyn, and their granddaughter, Maria Lucas, and Kathleen S. Keiper and her husband, Tim, and their children, Kayla and Tyler and his fiancee, Kerry Possinger. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was everyone's favorite "Uncle AI" and had many friends that he considered "family."
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, at Reed and Steinbach Funeral Home, 2335 Lower State Road, Doylestown. A second viewing will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main St., Stroudsburg. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at William H. Clark Funeral Home, where the public may pay their respects after 10 a.m., prior to the service. Interment will follow in Stroudsburg Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions in Mr. Andress' name may be made to the charity of donor's choice.

Aylia Wortman was the wife of Jacob Andress of Beattystown
Thanks to a tip from Maryann of Boston I was led to the following publication and to a nice clue on the trail of Jacob Andress of Beattystown. I’ve suspected, without hard evidence that Mrs. Woertman was the second wife of Jacob. It also appears that Mrs. Woertman was previously married. I still don’t know who her parents were, but her first name is now revealed.
From A Genealogy of the Van Voorhees Family in America of the Descendants of Steven Coerte Van Voorhees of Holland, and Flatlands, L. I. by Elias W. Van Voorhis, published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons, The Knickerbocker Press, in 1888, on page 391 is the following information:
Johannes, the son of Lucas Voorhees and Hilletje Vanderbilt, was “bap. Feb. 6, 1763, d. . . . . . ; m. Aylia Wortman, b. . . . . . ; d. Jan. 20, 1822 (she m. 2nd . . . Andress). He removed about 1786 from New Brunswick, N.J,. and settled near Wilkesbarre, Pa., where he died ; after his death his widow settled at Beattystown, N.J., where she married her second husband.” Johannes Voorhees and Aylia Wortman had the following two children: John, bap. Mar. 5, 1786, and Albert, b. Dec. 28, 1786.
There’s no doubt that Aylia Wortman was the wife of Jacob Andress of Beattystown and the mother of Elizabeth, Peter, Joseph and Hampton Andress. For more information on Jacob Andress please read Who Was Jacob Andress of Beattystown?

UPDATED: 12 Oct. 2008
A few days after I posted the above information Maryann sent me a copy of page 762 from Florence A. Christoph’s The First Eight Generations of the Van Voorhees Family. The page contains a little bit of information about Alyia Wortman the mother of Albert Voorhees: There is a photocopy of a page of a family bible held by the Van Voorhees Association. There is an entry in the bible that reads “Allie Anders his mother” died 20 Jan. 1822. 1982 correspondence with Claire Swanson of Hackettstown, NJ, indicates that Claire’s mother remembered visiting the Andress family in Penwell, NJ (near Beattystown) and that Albert’s mother’s name was Olivia Andress. Also mentioned is the 1939 membership application to the Van Voorhees Association by a great-grandson of Albert by the name of Charles Voorhees Hults. Charles wrote that Albert was the son of Johannes Voorhees and Aylia Wortman.

Second:- I give and bequeath to my niece, Maggie Bellis, wife of Ervin Bellis, my gold watch and chain and the sum of five hundred dollars; and also my sparebedroom brussels carpet;
I give and bequeath to William M. Andress, my reputed nephew, the son of my late brother Theodore Andress, now living at Matamora, in the State of Michigan, the sum of five hundred dollars.
I give and bequeath to my nephew, Charles K. Mann, the sum of five hundred dollars. I give all my clothing and wearing apparel and jewelry to my sister, Alice A. Transue.
Third:- I give to my executor hereinafter named the sum of one thousand dollars, in trust, nevertheless, that he keep the same invested in such manner as he may deem best, and the interest and income thereof and so much of the principal as he may deem necessary to be by him used and applied for the support and maintenance of my niece, Huldah Andress, daughter of my brother Roderick B. Jacob Andress Middlesworth
Jacob Andress Middlesworth was born 20 Sept. 1819, in Hope Twp., Warren Co., NJ, to James L. and Euphemia Middlesworth. On 15 July 1848, Jacob married Catherine Wintermute. Born 24 Nov. 1817 she was the daughter of Peter Wintermute and Catherine Snover. In the same year of their marriage, 1848, Jacob and Catherine moved to Schooley’s Mountain, Washington Twp., Morris Co. NJ, and had their first child, Maria, soon after. In 1849 or 50 they had their second child, Jehu. Maria died 17 March 1856 at age eight. Jacob died 07 June 1883. Catherine died 11 Dec. 1891. Jehu never married and died after the age of eighty.
Was Jacob Andress Middlesworth the grandson of Jacob Andress of Beattystown?
At this point of research three documents uncover the following links:
(1) Joseph Andress Jr., grandson of Jacob Andress of Beattystown, lived, for a short while, with Jacob Andress Middlesworth at Schooley’s Mountain.
(2) Jacob Andress Middlesworth was the son of James L. Middlesworth and Euphemia Middlesworth.
(3) James L. Middlesworth was associated with Joseph Andress and Peter W. Andress (sons of Jacob Andress of Beattystown.)
First, according to the 1850 federal census Jacob Andress Middlesworth was a merchant living in Washington Twp., Morris County. Living with Jacob was a clerk, Joseph Andress, age 21. Joseph was the son of Peter W. Andress, born 19 Jan. 1829, and grandson of Jacob Andress of Beattystown. Joseph’s 29 July 1887 obituary from The Belvedere Apollo includes the following insight: “In early life he acquired good business habits and when quite a young man opened a store for himself at Schooley’s Mountain.”
Second, Euphemia Middlesworth of Hope Township wrote her Will 11 April 1844. Her estate inventory was recorded 13 April 1847. After ordering her debts to be paid, Euphemia gives “to my son Jacob A. Middlesworth of Stillwater . . . . all of my property and estate” She then appoints him Executor of her Will. Witness to her Will were John L Silverthorn and another person whose name is illegible. John L. Silverthorn and Abraham (?Truse?) were appraisers of her estate’s inventory.
Third, James L. Middlesworth of Oxford Township wrote his Will 22 Nov. 1826. His estate inventory was recorded on 02 Jan. 1827 and his Will probated on the 6th of Jan. Witness to his Will were Samuel Hudson, Isaac R Newman, and Daniel Mixell. The Executor of the Will was Abraham Newman. Appraisers of the inventory were James Dewitt and Daniel Mixell. In his Will James gives to his “dear wife Effami Middlesworth” a number of household items and the “house and lot in the village of Hope.” In the Will he doesn’t name his children, but mentions that they were under age. Included with the estate inventory is a Book Account which lists the debts of about eighty persons. “Joseph Andrews, $4.26” and “Peter Andrews, $2.62” are included in that list.
The parents of Jacob Andress Middlesworth were probably born around the turn of the century. Perhaps a record will never be uncovered to prove the claim, but I suspect that Euphemia Middlesworth is actually the daughter of Jacob Andress of Beattystown. In my 29 May 2007 posting entitled “Who was Jacob Andress of Beattystown?” I attempted to show a connection between the Andress family and the Ayers / Longstreet family. If the claim is correct about Jacob’s first marriage to Elli Longstreet Ayres, it is interesting to note that Elli’s mother’s name is Euphemia. Perhaps it’s just a coincidence.
