SOURCES & NOTES:

29 July 1887, Belvedere Apollo, page 2: “ANDRESS -- July 22d, at Hainsburgh, Joseph Andress, aged 58 years, 6 month and 3 days.” page 3: “Obituary -- Joseph Andress -- After a sickness of some years, Joseph Andress, one of the best known and successful business men in the northern part of the County, died at his home in Hainesburg on Friday morning last, in his fifty-ninth year. Mr. Andress was a son of Peter Andress, and was born near Paulina in 1829. At the early age of eight years he left home to clerk in a store for an uncle at Middleville, then known as “Gin Pint,” in Sussex County. In early life he acquired good business habits and when quite a young man opened a store for himself at Schooley’s Mountain. He soon returned, however, to Middleville, where he conducted the mercantile business successfully for some time. It is said that when he went to Hainesburg twenty six years ago he had a capital of $7,000. Here he did a large business and made money rapidly. Some eight years ago his robust constitution gave way and he was compelled to give up active business. Having acquired a large amount of real and personal property he gave it his attention and managed it with his rare financial ability. At the time of his death, he owned several hundred acres of land both in Warren and Sussex counties. He had three large farms in Sussex County. His wealth is estimated at from $70,000 to $100,000. He had an insurance on his life which amounted to about $8,000. He was never married and for some time past his married sister, Margaret, has kept house for him. There are six heirs, three brothers and three sisters: Roderick B., Jacob and William and Mrs. Drake Mann, Mrs. Frank Transue and Margaret. Mr. Andress was a public spirited man and contributed liberally to objects which commanded themselves to his judgment, the Methodist Church of Hainesburg being one of these. In politics Mr. Andress was a pronounced Republican. The funeral took place on Tuesday. The remains were buried in the Marksboro cemetery.”
